Machine Quilting Basics

Location: East Mesa Store
Date: Wednesday, Jan 17, 2018
Time: 10:00 am - 3:30pm
Instructor: Linda Hopkins
Cost: $35

During this class you will be introduced to many different ways to use your walking foot to create today's modern quilts.  Also discussed will be packaging your quilt, types and uses of batting, needles and threads. You will be given a short break for lunch, so you can either bring something with you or go out for a quick bite if you would like.

  • Sewing Machine, in good working condition. Also bring your manual, all cords and quilters extension table if you have one.
  • NEW 80/12 needle
  • Two 16 to 18 inch squares of muslin, cotton batting (low loft), and backing fabric
  • Walking foot, with the quilting guide that attaches to the back of the foot
  • Curved quilt basting pins, Size 1
  • Blue Painters tape, 1-1/2 inches wide or wider
  • Quilters ruler - Ideal sizes are 1" x 6" and 4" x 12", but bring what you have
  • Fabric marking pen (washout) that will show on your fabric
  • Quilting gloves or other aides that help you move fabric (optional)
  • Small scissors and basic sewing supplies
  • Paper and pen for lots of notes
  • Good 50 weight thread, either cotton or poly, such as Aurifil 50 weight
  • Invisible nylon thread

  • Prepare a sample 9 patch quilt top to use in class. Individual blocks may be either 5-1/2" or 6-1/2". Use LIGHT colored fabrics (non-print or tonal) for 5 of the blocks, and a medium tonal for the remaining 4 blocks. Sew these together using 1/4" seam allowance, press and cut batting and backing at LEAST 4 inches larger than your finished 9 patch.
  • Know how to attach your walking foot, adjust stitch length, and adjust tension.
