Never tried making a round quilt? Don’t know what to do with the 9 or 10 degree ruler in the back of the sewing closet?

By using Cheryl’s NON-TRADITIONAL and EASY methods, you can…
- sew strips of fabric into sets
- cut wedges from these strip sets
- add batting and backing
- quilt by machine or hand
…and you will have a beautiful circular quilt that can be used as a wall-hanging, tree skirt, tablecloth, baby quilt, floor quilt or draped across the back of your couch. How about making half a quilt for a window valance or covering a fireplace mantel? Or as the center of a medallion quilt?

There are 6 magnificent quilt designs (with multiple variations) in the book. We will start with the Woodland Butterfly Quilt. This class will be great for any quilter looking for something different than the traditional!

Space is limited, so please call the store at 480-545-0778 to register.

SUPPLIES NEEDED:

FABRIC – see page 6 of the book for the amount of fabric to have on-hand. Add 1/4 yd to each color if you think you may need more. Good quality 100% cotton is easiest to work with. Avoid stripes, directional prints and large pattern repeats that may distort your design. Large prints are seldom effective when cut into small segments. If using stripes or directional prints, please add more fabric.

FABRIC COLOR – On Page 4 of Cheryl’s book, read the section about Fabric Selection to help you choose your fabric. Carefully study the design of the butterfly quilt. Select contrasting colors where design lines need to be prominent.

If you have your fabric, please bring to our Organization meeting. If not, the instructor will be happy to help you choose your selection.

SUPPLIES to BRING to 2nd and 3rd class meetings:

FABRIC as mentioned

BOOK – “Quilts Without Corners” by Cheryl Phillips

WEDGE RULER – a choice of the 9 or 10 degree ruler

BASIC SEWING KIT – such as plenty of pins, paper scissors, GOOD scissors, assorted rulers, cutting mat, chalk or “purple/blue” markers, rotary cutters, cutting mats, etc. Your own IRON AND PAD will save you time in not having to share and wait.

SEWING MACHINE in good working condition and all necessary accessories for sewing, such as power cords, foot control, correct bobbin casing, extra empty bobbins, machine manual, etc. Set your machine for sewing mode. A decorative stitch may be used when adding the body of the butterfly as an appliqué to the center. (You must be familiar enough with your machine to know how to adjust the needle positions, change the tension, change the stitch length, etc.)

SEWING MACHINE MANUAL – bring the manual for your sewing machine to every class meeting so that we can look up settings particular to your machine. Always check the manual PRIOR to starting a sewing technique you are not familiar with.

Good quality SEWING THREAD to match or to contrast the color of your fabric pieces.

2 BOBBINS pre-wound with matching thread

SEWING MACHINE NEEDLES

OTHER HELPFUL TOOLS – 1/4-inch foot, open-toe foot, seam guide, quilting gloves, single-needle plate for your machine if you have one, temporary spray adhesive or quilt basting spray, paper and writing instrument for note taking.

Also check out pages 4 to 5 of Cheryl Phillips’ book for additional information regarding equipment and supplies.
