Afraid to free-motion quilt? Don’t be. Machine quilting can actually be great fun!!

Come to class and find out some of the secrets to free-motion machine quilting and master techniques by using some of the right tools. Basic hints for trouble-shooting will also be addressed!

Bring with you 4 fat quarters (plain or with subtle design is best) and 2 cotton batting to fit and we will “play” and practice for a few hours on your sewing machine so that you become comfortable with a few free-motion techniques. You will complete basic hands-on exercises and the instructor will demonstrate some more advanced techniques during class.

A kit is available for a small project to be completed in class.

If you have any questions, please email the instructor Kat Emmelkamp at: kat@computerbob.net

Other SUPPLIES besides fabric and batting to BRING with you to class:
  • BASIC SEWING KIT – such as plenty of pins, good scissors, rulers, chalk or “purple” markers, rotary cutters, etc.
  • SEWING MACHINE in good working condition and all necessary accessories for sewing, such as power cords, foot control, correct bobbin casing, extra empty bobbins, machine manual, etc. Set your machine for sewing mode. (You must be familiar enough with your machine to know how to drop the feed dogs, change the tension, change the stitch length, etc.)
  • Your favorite QUILTING THREAD to match fat quarters – 1 or 2 shades lighter or darker than the fabric. (If you don’t know what thread to use, the instructor will be discussing thread options and other quilting supplies available during class.)
  • 2 BOBBINS pre-wound with same quilting thread
  • 70/10 or 80/12 QUILTING NEEDLES – I recommend Schmetz needles
  • Temporary SPRAY ADHESIVE or QUILT BASTING SPRAY (please plan to sandwich your fat quarters prior to class – see pre-class preparation)
  • FREE-MOTION QUILTING FOOT (may also be known as a darning foot)
  • Paper and writing instrument for note taking

OPTIONAL:
QUILTING GLOVES
SINGLE-NEEDLE PLATE for your machine if you have one

PRE-CLASS PREPARATION:
Make two fat quarter quilt sandwiches. Use quilt basting spray to adhere a top and a backing to your batting to create 2 quilt sandwiches to bring to class.
